How to create calculated numeric questions?

Calculated Numeric Questions are a type of question in Blackboard that allows you to create problems with variable values. This means that each student receives a unique version of the question, where the numbers change randomly within a specified range. This helps to prevent cheating and ensures that each student is assessed individually.

Limitations of Calculated Numeric Questions in Blackboard Ultra:

While calculated numeric questions are a valuable tool, they do have some limitations:

  1. Limited Formula Complexity: The formulas used to generate the questions must be relatively simple. Complex calculations or advanced mathematical functions may not be supported.
  2. No Unit Support: The questions cannot include units (e.g., meters, kilograms, seconds).
  3. Limited Randomization: The randomization of values is limited to a specific range and pattern. More complex randomization schemes may not be possible.
  4. Potential for Student Confusion: If the randomization is too extreme, it may lead to confusion or difficulty in understanding the problem.
  5. Grading Considerations: While Blackboard automatically grades these questions, it's important to review the grading process to ensure accuracy, especially if there are multiple correct answers or complex rounding rules.

Despite these limitations, calculated numeric questions can be a useful tool for assessing students' understanding of mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills. By carefully designing the questions and considering the limitations, instructors can create effective and fair assessments.

To create calculated numeric questions:

  1. Access Your Test or Assignment:

  2. Select "Calculated Numeric":

    • From the list of question types, choose Add Calculated Numeric question.
  3. Type the Question Text:

    • In the Type Question # field, write the question text.
  4. Type the Correct Answer.
  5. Specify Answer Range (Optional):

    • The range value can be an integer, decimal, or scientific notation. The largest value supported is 16 digits.

  6. Add Feedback (Optional):

    • Provide specific feedback for correct and incorrect answers to help students learn.
  7. Click Save to add the calculated numeric question to your test.
