Creating a journal in Blackboard Ultra is straightforward and is very similar to Discussions. To learn more about Discussion, you may visit the article: How to create discussions?

  1. Go to Course Content: Navigate to the Course Content page where you want to add the journal.
  2. Add a Journal: Click the plus sign (+) and select Create.
  3. Select Journal: In the Create Item panel, scroll down and choose Journal.
  4. Enter Details: Provide a meaningful title and add a prompt to set expectations and guidelines for the journal.
  5. Customize Settings: Use the editor to format text, attach files, and embed multimedia as needed.
  6. Save and Set Visibility: Click Save and set the visibility options for the journal. New journals are hidden by default, so make sure to make it available to students when ready.

Additionally, you can also set enable the journal to be graded.

  • Set Grading Options: Specify the due date, maximum points, and other grading options as needed.

You can also let your students know the grade rubric that you will use to evaluate them, but this is optional.

Be advised that once grading is enabled, a column will be automatically created in the Gradebook for the discussion.

Do not forget to make your newly created Journal visible to your students.
