If you're an instructor who has used Blackboard Original (also called Blackboard Learn "Original Course View") and are now transitioning to Blackboard Ultra, the differences can feel significant.

The Blackboard "ULTRA Course View" Experience

As you can see on the screenshots above, the interface is very different. Here’s a breakdown of how Blackboard Ultra differs from the original, from an instructor’s point-of-view:

1. Interface & Navigation

  • Ultra: Modern and more intuitive interface with a responsive design that works well on mobile devices.
  • Original: Older, and more complex interface.

2. Course Layout & Structure

  • Ultra: Streamlined "Course Content" page.
  • Original: Folder-based structure, which can make content organization more complex.

3. Content Creation & Management

  • Ultra: Drag-and-drop functionality, inline document editing, and a simpler workflow for adding content.
  • Original: More options but also more complexity, requiring multiple clicks to create and edit content.

4. Assessments & Grading

  • Ultra: The "Gradebook" is more user-friendly, providing quick access to student performance with real-time feedback options.
  • Original: Grade Center is powerful but can be overwhelming due to its spreadsheet-like design.

5. Communication Tools

  • Ultra: Integrated discussions, announcements, and messages are more visually appealing and easier to use.
  • Original: Discussion boards and messages exist but feel more dated and less intuitive.

6. Customization & Features

  • Ultra: Limited in customization but ensures consistency and ease of use. Some features (like advanced adaptive release) are not yet available.
  • Original: Highly customizable but can be overwhelming with too many options.

7. Mobile Experience

  • Ultra: Fully responsive and mobile-friendly, making it easier for instructors and students to engage on any device.
  • Original: Blackboard's mobile app exists but is less seamless compared to Ultra’s built-in design.

If you’re used to the Blackboard Original Experience, Ultra may initially feel limiting, but it ultimately simplifies course management and enhances accessibility.
